Born in Olney, Texas, Bob Lilly was raised in Throckmorton, Texas, where he lived through his junior year in high school. He moved with his family to Pendleton, Oregon the summer before his senior year in high school. Through the moves, Bob remained a strong athlete and continued to excel in sports, becoming an All-Stater in football and basketball. Upon his graduation in 1957, it was back to Texas where Bob had been recruited by Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and offered a football scholarship. He earned All- American honors as defensive tackle for the Horned Frogs. In 1961 the Dallas Cowboys were just developing as an organization. Bob Lilly was their first choice and became in effect the very first Dallas Cowboy. During his 14 year career with the Cowboys, Lilly missed only one game. His speed, strength and intelligence on the field earned him All-Pro honors as well as the opportunity to play the All-Star Game for 11 of those 14 years. Upon his retirement in 1975, Bob Lilly was honored by the Dallas Cowboys, who inscribed his name in the Texas Stadium Ring of Honor. In 1980 he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, and in 1981 he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of fame. Bob Lilly and his wife Ann currently reside in Sun City Texas, where he owns and operates a professional imaging and promotions company. They enjoy the frequent visits of their four children and nine grandchildren. his story |
